Jumpstart's Read for the Record
Jumpstart’s Read for the Record raises public awareness about the importance of early childhood education programs, early literacy, and community involvement for all children of every income level by gathering to read the same book on the same day. We are requesting that every elementary school join us in setting a new world record in a way that engages our entire community – children, families, and civic leaders – in our schools.
The 2019 campaign book was Thank You, OMU, written by Oge Mora.
The Department of Curriculum & Instruction purchases a special, paperback edition of the chosen campaign book for our Pre-K thru 2nd grade teachers so that they may participate with their students on the campaign day. In addition, Jumpstart has resources available on-line for educators, including classroom activities, lesson plans, certificates of participation, registration guidelines, and other pertinent materials. These resources may be found at: http://www.jstart.org/campaigns/read-for-the-record.
All Shelby County elementary schools are encouraged to take part in this great event. It is a major program for Library Services each year.
Read Across America
NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. The program is supported by our local Memphis Shelby County Education Association. Shelby County Schools library information specialists develop programs and activities built around this event, and invite guest readers to come to their schools in March and read to a group of children. Just like the Read for the Record program, it is common to see parents, local celebrities, sports heroes, government officials and our own superintendent and cabinet members reading to a class of children. We look forward to this event each spring to encourage reading.
